How Long After I Give Birth Should I Start Waist Training

Just popped a bun out of the oven? Giving birth is not only a life-changing experience but it also takes a toll on your body and dramatically alters it. That’s why many women are opting to bind their belly to support their belly after pregnancy.  Binding techniques have been a tradition amongst postpartum women for years. However, a lot of women have decided to replaced traditional binders with a waist trainer.

Waist training has become a popular method for snapping back into shape for women who have just given birth. Before you begin waist training it’s important to understand just how it can affect your postpartum body.

Why Compression Is Important After Child Birth?

As you know the body undergoes a number of changes after giving birth to a baby especially in the first few months. It can take approximately six weeks for the uterus to shrink back to it’s normal size. It takes over a month for your body to secrete excess fluid through sweat and urine that your body carries around during pregnancy. In addition,  hormones like estrogen and progesterone that are responsible for helping the muscles and ligaments in the abdomen stretch to carry a baby remain at elevated levels for several months.

During this recovery period, compression therapy or wearing a waist trainer can offer numerous benefits. A waist trainer provides the ultimate support to the back and the abdomen muscles and can help prevent diastasis recti which is a condition where the abdominal muscles remain separated after pregnancy. It also supports your back and helps relieve lower back pain and improves your posture. If you underwent a C-section procedure, binding your belly with a waist trainer can help alleviate pain, pressure and reduce swelling.

When Should I Start Wearing A Waist Trainer?

You can begin wearing your Body Maxx waist trainer a couple of days after giving birth but it’s important to be mindful of the level of compression you choose. In the initial stages, it’s best to choose a waist trainer with light compression that will provide the support you need while allowing you to heal.  After the six week mark, you should be able to experiment with waist trainers with higher levels of compression depending on your health. The Body Maxx waist trainers are adjustable and you can choose the level of compression you desire.

Keep in mind, if you want to shed the fat you’ve gained during your pregnancy, waist training should be combined with a healthy diet and lots of exercise.
